Bancroft School / BNIM Architects & Make It Right
A new redevelopment project will transform a closed Kansas City schoolhouse into a new vibrant center for a community. The $14 million project will convert the 103-year-old brick school building into 29 affordable apartments with a 6,250-square-foot community center on the main floor. A new building with 21 apartments will also developed, both projects being planned and designed by Kansas City firm BNIM Architects.
The project is receiving help from actor Brad Pitt’s Make It Right Foundation. Having completed very several sustainable housing projects in the New Orleans, Make It Right Foundationis looking to expand it’s services to help other communities to help with sustainable development. Backers of the Bancroft renovation say it could be a good model for how to redevelop other closed schools.
